Filed under: Uncategorized — rileyharper @ 5:37 am

Guatemala has one of the most extensive and diverse forest systems in Central America. The country is home to 1,246 known species of amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles, and 8,681 species of plants. Today forest covers between a quarter and a third of the country, but this is fast disappearing. Between 1990 and 2005, Guatemala lost 17 percent of its total forest cover and deforestation rates have increased by nearly 13 percent since the close of the 1990s

Rainforests are often called the lungs of the planet for their role in absorbing carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, and producing oxygen, upon which all animals depend for survival. How Rainforest Land Should Be Used April 3, 2013

Experts agree that by leaving the rainforests intact and harvesting it’s many nuts, fruits, oil-producing plants, and medicinal plants, the rainforest has more economic value than if they were cut down to make grazing land for cattle or for timber. I think we should keep them intact and not cut down trees as it makes sure there are more rainforets and their plants and animals. It is important that the rainforests are not getting wrecked. They need to be preserved for the future.

Human affects on the rainforest-positive and negative April 2, 2013

Slashing and burning of forests leaves local communities vulnerable to fire. It also reduces the habitat of the native animals. If the animals lose food or shelter they may die or become extinct. Humans should stop logging rainforests for palm oil, paper, furniture, gum and other products so that creatures can survive.
The advantages of logging is that it provides humans with materials to build houses, furniture and supplies them with certain foods and paper for education.

The jaguar is one of the many animals found in the rainforest in Central America.
Jaguars can reach up to six feet in length — from their nose to the tip of their tail — and stand up to three feet tall at the shoulder.
The average male jaguar weighs about 120 pounds, but some individuals can weigh as much as 300 pounds. Newborn jaguars weigh only two pounds.
Jaguars are most famous for their beautiful spotted coats. The spots on the jaguar allow them to hide amongst the grasses, bushes and trees that dominate its habitat.Image

The Eyelash Viper is one of Central American’s animals of rainforest snakes.
The Eyelash Palm Pit Viper is named for the bristly scales above its eyes. It looks like it has a “hood” or eyelashes over its eyes.
It can be easily recognised by its colour and triangular head.
Individuals are found in different colours such as yellow, green, and pinkish. This great variety usually depends on the geographic origin of snake.
It is one of the smallest poisonous snakes in Central America, measuring only up to 2.5 feet (76 cm) and averaging about 22 to 32 inches (56 to 81 cm).Image
